Destroy the Constution, Aussie edition.

New Zealand does not have a constitution. Parliament is sovereign (technically the King-in-parliament) and there is but only one house. So that the issues the Australians have about their deputy PM being disqualified because he did not renounce the NZ citizenship he did not know he had — for his grandfather was from NZ –is easily remedied, as Dvid Farrar notes of facebook.

I’m surprised that the Australian Government is having a by-election after Barnaby Joyce was found ineligible due to dual citizenship.
When the same situation happened in NZ with Harry Duynhoven, Labour simply retrospectively amended the Electoral Act to avoid a by-election. Yep that’s right – they retrospectively amended the law around parliamentary eligibility.
I guess it is harder to retrospectively amend a constitution, but I’m sure Labour would have given it a go.

The trouble with a constitution is that lawyers and judges decide what is the law. This bought euthanasia to Canada and abortion to the United States. Far better to have a parliament, frequent elections, and a bloody minded populace who will vote the bastards out.

Australia should do likewise: if this means that the continent dissolves into its constituent colonies then that would be a bonus.
