I have taken the defensive step of installing tinyMCE Advanced. This is because WordPress is moving on. They no longer allow links by default, and now are trying to move to a more block like editor called Gutenberg. It is in beta at present.
The alternative worth considering is markdown, which is part of Jetpack, or can be installed separately. Both work nicely. I don’t need or want fancy what you can see tools when blogging. I set up themes to do that automatically.
My advice, as a blogger who runs a series of sites, is to leave well enough alone. Let Gutenberg be a plugin. Not the default.
