The Australians do some things very well, and one of them is engaging people in ordinary life to help each other. Generally without asking the professionals.
However, I found this because the local college had a tweet about it Apparently today is RUOK day.
The charity is about suicide prevention, and their goals are:
R U OK?’s vision is a world where we’re all connected and are protected from suicide.
Our mission is to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life.
Our goals are to:
- Boost our confidence to meaningfully connect and ask about life’s ups and down
- Nurture our sense of responsibility to regularly connect and support others
- Strengthen our sense of belonging because we know people are there for us
- Be relevant, strong and dynamic
There are risks here. That they will lose their goals, in a wish to be relevant.
As a Kiwi, I won’;t give them money: Australia is a richer place. But checking in with your family and friends and talking to them is a good thing.
Build your own communities, and support each other. Don’t ask permission.
And even, perhaps, as happened here, the college of psychiatrists will tweet in support of you.
“Build your own communities, and support each other.”
easier said than done in some areas than others, irl 🙂
