It is my duty and priveledge to be raising two boys. This limits what I do to a certain extent, but they are in their mid teens and there is some social pressure on them to interact with girls. As son one says… it takes time away from gaming.
Now, I am putting no pressure on them. If they remain without a girlfriend until they are in their 20s, I’d be happy. In fact I would rrather they were sharing a flat with fellow geeks as Sheldon does with Lionel in Big Bang Theory.
Because dating a Penny is too risky. The field has moved too far, and men are left with no constancy in their relationships. Even the more pro marriage and conservative branches of the church are facing far too many divorces and solo mothers… and not confronting the women in the church, which means that “good girls” are just as likely to leave you as “bad girls”.
(This is appalling for young women who are chaste. There is far more pressure on them to compromise, and there is a sense of mistrust about any person who claims to have not slept with any other person after a ridiculously young age. We are insulting those women who are godly by not confronting ungodly behaviour and assuming that all women are like that.)
But I’m raising boys. I tell them that if they sleep with someone, they better be prepared to raise that woman’s child. I also tell them that when you sleep with someone your sense of discernment about their godliness and behaviour disappears. There is a reason we should not play around until we are married.
Until then, Sheldon (or Amy FF) is a far better model than Penny.
Why is Sheldon’s character a Texan, yet doesn’t have the slightest Texan accent?
Are BBT’s producers suggesting that, if bright, one loses one’s regional, Texan accent?
Hmmm.
I lost my accent (very strong, working class Auckland) when I travelled to Canada, Will. Very rapidly. No one can understand a strong kiwi accent, spoken quietly, at my natural rate (120-140wpm). I had to s.l.o.w d.o.w.n. As I’m sure the Indian actors (Priya and Krishnamurti) also had to do.
My boyfriend is the innocent-geek type [which is why I love him so much...]
I feel so lucky to have him, because I read all these stories on the blogosphere about decent guys who were hurt by unsavory women and have grown bitter. I’m a decent, kind, caring individual – I wouldn’t be able to date a man that is incapable of fully trusting me. My boyfriend trusts me, and I would never consider doing anything that would destroy such a rare and wonderful bond.
and not confronting the women in the church, which means that “good girls” are just as likely to leave you as “bad girls”.
Well, I’m skeptical of “good girls” in church. I’ve noticed that nearly all “good” church women have unsavory pasts. ['cause, you know - they conveniently discover Jesus right around the time they're looking to get married] If someone confronts women in church about their past indiscretions, their response is always “Oh, I wasn’t a real Christian back then; my sins don’t count.” “I asked God for forgiveness, so my promiscuous past no longer counts.” [i.e. the rather popular "Jesus is a get-out-of-jail-free-card" misconception] To be honest, I’m sorta convinced most women become Christians later in life just so they can act superior to to others [I mean, rarely encounter behavior to disprove said theory]. & I’m sure if a Priest/Pastor did speak out against the misbehavior of women, he would be condemned for judging. ’cause, you know…chastising Christians for not behaving like Christians apparently qualifies as judging. Yet for some reason it’s okay to judge the Christian men who don’t want to date a reformed “I found Jesus!” slut.
PS:
Raj is a good example of the “trust-fund kid getting a prestigious, yet otherwise useless degree” situation I mentioned in my “Liberal Arts is Dead” comment. [Err, season 5 spoiler: Raj's family is nearly "Scrooge McDuck" rich].
You know, I don’t understand why Howard is shamed for being a mere “Aeronautic Engineer” – his degree is the most useful of the group. & he should be making well over six figures.
