Hell and Judgment.

There is a fashion against fear and condemnation. People no longer publish sermons meditating in graphic detail as to the fate of the reprobate. Dante would not find a publisher unless he had a sassy heroine, preferably with some occultic powers and the ability to make hell suitable for unicorns and babies, with no pain: to make hell heaven.

Trouble is that the main teacher on hell in the Bible is Jesus Christ.

Revelation 21:5-8

5And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. 7Those who conquer will inherit these things, and I will be their God and they will be my children. 8But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the polluted, the murderers, the fornicators, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all liars, their place will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Now the list is interesting… cowardice, faithless, polluted (by what? substances? habitual sin? what we call addictions?), murderers, fornicators (ie living together), sorcerers and liars….

… and since most of us have lied, and many have been cowards and most people nowadays are faithless, we are all damned. We are seen as the equivalent of murderers. We face damnation.

The only way out of this situation is by the mercy of God. To those who seek him, salviation is available. For Judgement awaits us all, and we are told be even the church to ignore it.
