Comment at SSM (Divorce, again).

SSM argues that divorce is always wrong. That marriage is forever. And if you divorce, you should never remarry.

On doctrine, I turn to the Bible and as a lesser standard the Westminster Confession of Faith. So I commented there:

@SSM. If you are reformed (I think you are more of a arminist than you think) then the standard teaching of the church has not changed. Chapter 24. Westminster Confession, dating from 1660ish, in its entirety.

Chapter XXIV
Of Marriage and Divorce

I. Marriage is to be between one man and one woman: neither is it lawful for any man to have more than one wife, nor for any woman to have more than one husband, at the same time.[1]

II. Marriage was ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife,[2] for the increase of mankind with a legitimate issue, and of the Church with an holy seed;[3] and for preventing of uncleanness.[4]

III. It is lawful for all sorts of people to marry, who are able with judgment to give their consent.[5] Yet it is the duty of Christians to marry only in the Lord.[6] And therefore such as profess the true reformed religion should not marry with infidels, papists, or other idolaters: neither should such as are godly be unequally yoked, by marrying with such as are notoriously wicked in their life, or maintain damnable heresies.[7]

IV. Marriage ought not to be within the degrees of consanguinity or affinity forbidden by the Word.[8] Nor can such incestuous marriages ever be made lawful by any law of man or consent of parties, so as those persons may live together as man and wife.[9] The man may not marry any of his wife’s kindred, nearer in blood then he may of his own: nor the woman of her husband’s kindred, nearer in blood than of her own.[10]

V. Adultery or fornication committed after a contract, being detected before marriage, gives just occasion to the innocent party to dissolve that contract.[11] In the case of adultery after marriage, it is lawful for the innocent party to sue out a divorce and, after the divorce,[12] to marry another, as if the offending party were dead.[13]

VI. Although the corruption of man be such as is apt to study arguments unduly to put asunder those whom God has joined together in marriage: yet, nothing but adultery, or such wilful desertion as can no way be remedied by the Church, or civil magistrate, is cause sufficient of dissolving the bond of marriage:[14] wherein, a public and orderly course of proceeding is to be observed; and the persons concerned in it not left to their own wills, and discretion, in their own case.[15]

Now, I am divorced and male. I hated divorce before it happened (and it does fit within the rules here).
But listen to experience. A divorce is worth than a death. If she is dead then you can mourn her and move on. I have to interact with my ex. Despite the damage she did (Look I am a solo Dad. The courts gave me custody: despite the fact the children were then living with her).

Would I remarry? Well — since I am an old fashioned Presbyterian who considers the church fathers did get this right — perhaps. I will say that for the last few years I have not dated and raised my sons. And that celibacy is painful.

But better than living with a vexatious woman who does active damage. Even if she remains in good standing in our old church.

I am not sure if I understand the Orthodox position, but the Roman position is that a sacramental marriage is lifelong unless it is annulled — in which case it was no marriage but a fraud, and the life lived within that relationship was a lie and no different from a long term relationship.

This half gets away from the issue the Westminster divines mention. We tend to extend the causes. The newest one is abuse: the one before that was addiction. Neither, in my mind, stand up to scutiny, and here SSM (to be fair) is correct.

The church seems to be a big cheerleader of women divorcing their husbands in the case of abuse. I have even seen men on Christian men’s sites making exceptions for this. Let me state this one thing unequivocally right now – there is NO ABUSE CLAUSE in the Bible that permits divorce. If a woman’s husband is slapping her around, clearly he isn’t controlling his temper nor loving her like Bible says he should, and he is in sin, but just because a man is in unrepentant sin does not give his wife the right to divorce him biblically. And as to anything other than physical abuse (emotional, mental, psychological) – sister, please. He may be as rude and nasty as the day is long, but there is still no biblical right to divorce him. I’m not taking his side; he ought to be corrected, preferably by a close male friend or family member, but in any case his surly attitude does not justify divorce.

Now, the big problem for my Catholic friends is that the door of unfit sacrament can be forced wide open. This has happened in America — and the rate of annulment is high, which is a scandal.

PPS. Yes, on this issue I am bitter. You do not need to remind me of that. The issue is if the Westminster Divines are in error.
