The school competition and debian

Over the last 24 hours I have learnt a few things.

  • Do not try to install Debian testing directly, including the Debian CUT image.  At present, in my hands they are broken.  Using Debian stable and then upgrade.
  • When it is working, Debian is faster than Ubuntu.
  • Do not install the Nvidia drivers on testing…. at present they are breaking X.  Use the default (Nouveau) which is good enough.
  • Use beamer and latex (I use Lyx, which installs beamer by default) to write slides. And use other peoples lyx files to get yours working…
  • Dentists always talk about flossing (N=2, boys had appointments one after the other. Same message).

It is school open day season   Last night son two had to go to the sister school to his boys’ high school to play background music during the session.  There were displays up, the school was scrubbed to within an inch of its life, and the best side was on display.  Now this is a good school. But there are a half-dozen good high schools in my town — which is under 140 000.  The competition for students leaving intermediate (Year 8, Grade 7) and entering high school is there.  The consequence is that the local schools have to perform — or they will lose kids. (And yes, this is primarily state schools).

I’ve changed the theme, which should make navigating between posts a bit easier
