Tamaki and the Charities commission.

The Brian Tamaki/ Destiny Church issues continue. It is worth noting that Tamaki gave this sermon before the most recent set of earthquakes (I don’t think he wanted an earthquake to occur. He wanted people in Christ church to stop being pagans. He wanted sinners to repent).

From the Auckland Daily Fishwrap:

The petition, on Change.org, sprung up after the self-appointed Bishop’s Sunday sermon in which he told his congregation the earth “convulses under the weight of certain human sin”.

Charities Services today confirmed to the Herald it will begin an assessment after receiving a complaint from a member of the public.

“We take every complaint seriously and are following our usual process which is to make an initial assessment on whether there are grounds to believe that a charity may be in breach of the Charities Act, its own rules, or may be responsible for serious wrongdoing.

“This assessment will determine whether or not an investigation is required.”

A spokesman said it couldn’t comment any further while the process was underway.

When questioned about the petition last week, the Church didn’t appear bothered as it believed it would “create a precedent” if it was to be deregistered.

“Other churches could potentially be deregistered … There’s a Charities Commission in this country and they audit our books every year and see how valid and legitimate everything is and so that’s our position.”

Tamaki’s sermon came one day before the massive 7.8 earthquake struck central New Zealand killing two and leaving thousands stranded, with limited food, water, shelter and communication.

What are the rules? Well from the Charities Commission.

Charities Services receive a number of complaints from individuals with concerns about charities or people involved with them. As it is our role to promote public trust and confidence in the charitable sector, we investigate any suspected breaches of the Charities Act 2005 or wrongdoing in connection with a registered charity. We do not get involved in internal disputes related to governance or meeting protocol.

An inquiry is undertaken if it is considered reasonably necessary for the purposes of carrying out Charities Services’ functions and exercising its powers under the Act.

We also initiate our own inquiries and respond to information provided to us.

Examples of the types of issues that would justify a complaint to Charities Services could include the following, where there is a perceived risk of:

  • significant financial loss to the charity, or the illegal or corrupt use of the charity’s funds or resources;
  • serious harm to beneficiaries (especially to vulnerable beneficiaries);
  • direct or indirect funding of terrorism;
  • criminal activity within or involving a charity;
  • sham charities set up for an illegal or improper purpose;
  • charities deliberately being used for private pecuniary profit or to abuse New Zealand’s tax laws;
  • where a charity’s independence may be compromised;
  • serious wrongdoing by a charity, its officers/trustees or employees, that damages or has the potential to damage its reputation and/or the reputation of the charitable sector;
  • people collecting for non-existent charities or unauthorised people pretending to collect for Registered Charities;
  • serious non-compliance in a charity which could constitute serious risk to public interest;
  • damaging public trust and confidence in Charities Services as an effective regulator.

The website misses the point. In the exodus case, Exodus ministries was deregistered as a charity because it was not doing work deemed charitable since it aimed to help people with homosexual inclinations not act on them. (the term same sex attraction is sometimes used here). Rainbow Youth promotes homosexuality. Both organizations are biased. But one is not converged, and struggles on, paying taxes. The other is praised by the elite.

I would expect a complaint against Rainbow Youth would fail and the complaint against Destiny Church to succeed, followed by every other church that has not fallen into apostasy.

Avoid what the elite praise. Their time of power, like their master’s short.
