Overnight, a 7.1 earthquake off East Cape. This area is sparsely populated. The bigger risk will be a Tsunami, probably on the other side of the pacific.
This is the part of NZ I come from. People build in wood, all houses are low, and we drill responses.
Did not feel anything, but I live in the other Island and on the edge of a caldera 100m above sea level. Tt has to be about 6 and close for me to feel it.
UPDATE
Have managed to contact most of the family in the North Island. Those who live on the East Coast felt the quake. It was not felt by the Aucklanders.
