Lot was a coward and wimp, but we can learn some things from him. He was clearly not that physically fit, as he could but get to Zoar, the nearest town. He tried to appease the mob — telling them they could gang-rape his daughters.
But the mob did not care for women, but for men. They wanted him to allow that, and to break the laws of hospitality. I don’t think I am getting too far ahead if I say that Lot knew his neighbours, and their proclivities, and therefore offered hospitality.
We also can learn from the mob, but that is basically what not to do. No one player in this scene leaves without psychic dirt upon them.

Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or anyone you have in the city — bring them out of the place. 13For we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it.” 14So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, “Up, get out of this place; for the LORD is about to destroy the city.” But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
15When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Get up, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or else you will be consumed in the punishment of the city.” 16But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and left him outside the city. 17When they had brought them outside, they said, “Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the Plain; flee to the hills, or else you will be consumed.” 18And Lot said to them, “Oh, no, my lords; 19your servant has found favor with you, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, for fear the disaster will overtake me and I die. 20Look, that city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there — is it not a little one? — and my life will be saved!” 21He said to him, “Very well, I grant you this favor too, and will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. 22Hurry, escape there, for I can do nothing until you arrive there.” Therefore the city was called Zoar. 23The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar.
24Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25and he overthrew those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. 26But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
27Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD; 28and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomorrah and toward all the land of the Plain and saw the smoke of the land going up like the smoke of a furnace.
To return to Abraham’s bargain with God, there were not ten righteous men in Sodom. There was one somewhat righteous man. and he was a wimp.
We can learn, however, from Sodom. for when the tide of licentiousness increases, it takes all ages with it. The old do not restrain the young, but instead encourage even greater acts of depravity.
And when the licentious have power, they become violent. Note their comments — Lot was a foreigner, who is he to judge: it will be far worse with you than the abuse we will do to these strangers. Lot and his family were at risk.
Finally, trying to placate the mob does not work, it covers you with shame. We may not be placing our daughters deliberately in a mob the way that Lot did, but the very co educational and inebriated state of most halls of residence and most universities does this nicely for us.

I have a son who starts university this month. From home: I have had many friends tell me that he should be in a hostel, and getting the social interactions and tutorials of the hostel. The son does not want that: he wants to be in a home, a place of safety. He has seen enough bad things happen in the local boarding hostels (his school has one) to not consider these things as good.
And I will not throw him to the mob. Can we learn from these acts of evil? Well, we can learn from anything, by the spirit. But the answer to such learning is simple, and like the advice I give the lads: you need to learn self-improvement and to be busy and confident, but do not be a pick up artist. For the mob is not about men having sex with men, but violence, and in the case of Sodom, and institutionalized and weaponized use of rape.
And if our society is going down that path, and it is, then we need to be seen, like Lot tried to, as people who rescue and people who are different, with a full awareness that the mob will come after us, as well.

Well, it can be minimized. Seperate the known predators. Keep the remandees away from long timers. Manage the gangs. Hold the prison management accountable.
I can tell a good prison from a bad by the number of self harm attempts, and the number of suicides.
Admittedly, I live in a country that does not casually incarcerate one in fifty males, and where everyone fears Bubba. I live in a country where most police are unarmed. And I consider the US a risky place to visit — not because of the slums, but because you have to interact with the TSA, and aliens have NO rights.

I am speaking from experience: we were able to minimize the Bubbas of this world. In NZ.
I stay out of the USA for a whole pile of reasons: one of which is that your justice system is unjust, overly punitive, and your police forces are over armed, and without any sense of humour.
