Our duty, hard times.

I’ve been following the events in the world and writing realistic but bleak commentaries over the last few days. The question is what to do in rough times. Attached to that is what will happen in the future. And that leads directly to the text.

Luke 21:5-19

5When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said, 6“As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.”

7They asked him, “Teacher, when will this be, and what will be the sign that this is about to take place?” 8And he said, “Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is near!’ Do not go after them.

9“When you hear of wars and insurrections, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end will not follow immediately.” 10Then he said to them, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; 11there will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and plagues; and there will be dreadful portents and great signs from heaven.

12“But before all this occurs, they will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. 13This will give you an opportunity to testify. 14So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; 15for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. 16You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. 17You will be hated by all because of my name. 18But not a hair of your head will perish. 19By your endurance you will gain your souls.”

There are two parts of this that I can see:

  1. Trouble is inevitable. We are living in times that could be historic. We could be seeing the end of the West, we are probably seeing the end of the liberal/progressive experiment.  We will be shunned, we will be persecuted. Do not be shocked when it happens: when society turns away from God they come for the Jews, the gays, the activists, the unionists, the Catholics and the Reformed. Or those who have a conscience, a spine, and morals. It is a chance to say what you believe in a time when most people are silenced.  And If neither Peter or Paul were spared, our righteousness will not help us.
  2. Don’t get distracted. There are wars, rumours, conspiracies… and they are all occurring, and with the internet they are now all getting out. The elite can no longer control the discourse. But we can easily fall into a rabbit hole. We can either spend our time being thelogically perfect or concentrating on prophecy and forget that our chief aim is to know God, and do his will. For most of us that does not involve meditating on end time prophecies, but instead living as Jesus tells us we ought.

And, as a gloss, relax. God is in control. Your very existence is offensive  to those who think they can manage the souls of the nation in a false hope that we can produce some kind of perfect society.   Our job is to say that this society is on a path to destruction, and not live as the bulk want us to.  We should pray that we are spared the time of trial (Jesus did that, and taught us to do that) but if the trial comes, we should pray we have endurance for the truth. For that will lead to our salvation, and, unfortunately,  the damnation of our enemies, for our words will stand as witness. That they were warned.

  1. We People are very busy in today’s world. We have to give time to all in our life. Your title is very perfect.
