Remove ideology from the altar.

The first thing I am thinking of this morning is the news as i went to bed. It appears that some compromise has not quite been reached… the last news I can find is an hour ago, and things are shifting. However, the psalm for today says

Psalm 146

3   Do not put your trust in princes,
in mortals, in whom there is no help.
4   When their breath departs, they return to the earth;
on that very day their plans perish.

And this has never been as apropos as it is now. If you have no trust in our leadership, you won’t be disappointed.

I think the same applies to ideologies. Not the ideas: ideas can be good, evil or neutral. We are what we are. The way we are attracted to others, the way we will act to win, to compete, and to love is fairly hard wired. Both men and women have to modify their instincts to make a civilization.  And any person who think that there is a mere technique that can solve these problems is at risk of falling into the trap Paul describes.

Colossians 2:6-12

6As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

8See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ. 9For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, 10and you have come to fullness in him, who is the head of every ruler and authority. 11In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off the body of the flesh in the circumcision of Christ; 12when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

Politics and ideologies are of this world. We need to be aware of them, we need to know how to manage these tools, but we need to give them their place.

As tools, not Gods.

Have a joyous and blessed new year, all.
