I have used Thunderbird for years. It is cross platform (I run a Mac) and it identifies my email accounts, runs filters, and handles email fairly well.
But it is now flakey. It crashes and freezes computers. It has difficulties with dealing with large inboxen (thank you gmail, you delete little to nothing) and it does not play nicely.
Kde in its latest iteration of Kmail does email well. Very well. It has smart dates, allows me to have things by dates, filters, lets me read html but does not load them automatically (the best option) and runs well on Antergos/Cinnamon, which is my current laptop distro of choice.
If this continues, thunderbird will be replaced, slowly, on all the boxes.
