I have read my fair share of Moldbug. His site has been dormant for a while: a lot of the politics of are US centric, but he wrote many of the anti modernist or neo traditional thoughts that filter through the website. His last post — from 2014 — reads in part:
Better yet, give the living a rest and read the dead. For instance, it’s the broad general consensus of modern professional historians that James Buchanan was USG’s worst President evah. Well… haters gonna hate. But why not give our own dear reality the benefit of the doubt, set that consensus as a prior – and then read Mr. Buchanan’s own book? Which he actually, believe it or not, wrote himself? Like, you know, a real person?
I know. I know. You, also a real person, are too busy to read James Buchanan. But not too busy to hate him. Well, haters, etc. And for non-haters, if your dear little prior needs any more of a workout, which frankly would surprise me, work it again with Lincoln The Man. Personally I feel Lincoln is really the first of the modern Presidents, because I have a strong suspicion that just about every brilliant utterance we attribute to Lincoln, is actually the work of his brilliant young secretaries Nicolay and Hay. Another unprovable conspiracy theory, I know, I know.
Anyway, the Moldbug has a life, and has been working on a software project: urkit. Which is not my field: I can just follow the abstract. It was accepted for a conference (360 submissions, 60 accepted) but then the word went out — the Moldbug is talking.
So the conference stopped being about technology and became about dhimmi. Not to the ISIS trolls, but the SJW Fascists.
### Curtis Yarvin’s talk abstract
Title: urbit, a clean-slate functional stackAbstract: urbit is a new execution stack designed from scratch. The VM is a combinator automaton, nock, defined in 200 words. A strict, typed functional language, hoon, compiles itself to nock. arvo is an event-sourced OS in hoon, designed as a personal cloud server. While urbit still scales poorly, it’s stable enough to host a distributed chat network and serve React apps. The whole system is about 25,000 lines of code, all MIT licensed and patent-free.
Since none of urbit’s layers fits well in any system-software family tree, its key disadvantage is that you need to learn to program again. It’s also pretty slow, though we think we know how to make it fast. In exchange you get: a logical computer whose entire lifecycle is deterministic; a single-level store ("NoDB") where every packet is a transaction; an authenticated, encrypted network with a global immutable namespace; typed functional programming without category theory; typed, exactly-once network messages; and lots of other cool stuff that anyone sensible these days would put in a system software stack if she got the chance to design one.
Comments: The attendee will see urbit in action and come away believing that it’s actually real. They will see enough of what it does and doesn’t do well to decide if they like it or not.### Email from Alex Miller to Curtis Yarvin
Hi Curtis,
When your talk was posted on the Strange Loop web site today, I had immediate and vigorous feedback about the fact that you would be speaking at Strange Loop. I do not generally make any attempt to audit or care about the particular opinions or ideology of the people that I accept as speakers; I am generally focused on the content of the talks themselves.
However, in this case it is clear to me that your opinions in areas outside your talk are concerning enough for a significantly large number of attendees that those reactions are overshadowing the talk and acting as a distraction for launching the conference as a whole. Because of this, I am sorry that I must rescind your invitation and I will not be able to accept or include your talk at the conference. My apologies if this causes you any inconvenience.
Those from the left, get a clue. Being a neo trad is not being a racist. There are plenty of neo trads — particularly in the USA — who are not white: some of the most trenchant comments I have ever read on the consequences of the elite were written by women who have a fair amount of melaninin and have seen the “great society” (LBJ — worst president evah) destroy black society. Critiquing the current plantation ain’t racism.
Unless words have no meaning. In which case, the SJW have gone full moron.
Tech Guys, particularly at Strange Loop. Harden Up. You may have been hit by hacktivists. You may be worried that the scat throwing baboons (the step that follows a SJW going full moron) will arrive and picket you. But that is usual in my field.
Not as much in NZ: Scientology is rightfully mocked here. But overseas, I’m used to having the scientologists picketing conferences. Even when you are not talking about ECT. (Which, yes, I prescribe at times. Deal with it. I do have a trade, and I use all the tools of the trade).
The correct response is to tell those who disagree with this person speaking is We de-identify all abstracts when reviewing them for presentation. We accept all abstracts on the quality of the work. Now leave us in peace.
And then get on with the meeting. For we cannot let our tech, or science, be held to tests of blasphemy — political or religious — by the uninformed, feckless and idle. Lest those who seek excellence overtake us, and we cease to be on the cutting edge. There lies dhimmitude an the decline. If not the field, then the conference you were running.
“Code don’t care”. One of the means a lot of the programming world can keep itself from insanity. Somewhat.
And Wilson was the worst US President. Parts of the world is still burning due to his catastrophic naivete.
