It is very different from where I live: Otago is one of the dryer parts of NZ (we are on the Eastern side of the mountains: the other side is rain forest. Seriously cold rainforest) but even here we get a fair amount of rain, particularly in spring (we could get snow this weekend, and the daffodils have faded).

Trees are more than important here. They are either protected or harvested.

They laugh at drought, flood, cold and hot (insofar as we get those last). They are a place of refuge, food and shelter and shade. Trees are *important*.
