Well, I have spent time in Southern California, and I agree. It is very different from where I live: Otago is one of the dryer parts of NZ (we are on the Eastern side of the mountains: the other side is rain forest. Seriously cold rainforest) but even here we get a fair amount of rain, particularly in spring (we could get snow this weekend, and the daffodils have faded).
Trees are more than important here. They are either protected or harvested.
