But we DO have weird political stuff to work around the folks who don’t integrate – including being very helpful to those here illegally.
All the not-integrated grumpy people form something of a brace against Muslim invaders. Making me feel guilty and over polite? Not difficult. The vato across the street? Puhleeze. My husband used to get tackled on the way home from high school because big white boys make good bragging rights… if you can take them down…
*Mestizo men are often about my height or close to it. 6″ extra across the shoulders, mind you. But short. I tower over Mestizo women. And the Okinawan/South Asian women. I’m actually average height in my town…
FWIW I’m a NW European mutt – Irish, Scottish, English, German and Swedish. A little other stuff, but basically that.
]]>And the idea that Penelope Cruz is “Hispanic” while her French co-star is “European” is stupid.
It is the groups who cannot integrate that matter: and then only one. Those who want to be left alone generally just get on with things, be they Chinese, Sikh, Jewish or Amish. It is the groups that have an ideology of change that cause division. That ideology can be racialist (the 19th century nationalist movements, or the race-baiting in the USA) or religious (such as an insistance on Sharia).
The ideology of the USA IS the melting pot. What is currently called “white” includes the Anglos (moi: I have a family middle name that is also the name of a London Suburb) and the Scots-Irish (also moi) the Germans, the French Hugenots, the Dutch, the Poles… the Irish (different from the Scots-Irish, and severely discriminated against).
When the melting pot stops working, America will stop being American. And that includes intermarriage — consider how many of the Bush men (and that is a very WASPy family) have married beauties whose families came from “South of the Border”.
The problem in California is a tolerance of politics of identity that really should not be an issue. For there is a lot more in common between a Black American, or a Mexican-American, or a WASP, than they have with an Argentine or a Quebecios. Or someone from Manitoba, for that matter. The USA has a set of assumptions that don’t travel well.
