Calvin would argue that his systematic theology falls naturally out of that of Augustine: the only novelty he brings is a careful examination of each text in his commentary from the Greek and Hebrew. Many would argue this is not the case, and the besetting sin of Calvinists is a false certainty of their salvation. However, I would (and I am reformed) argue that calvinists are not mean, they are humble. It’s around one of those logical conclusions: we are doubly damned — firstly because death entered this world at the fall, and no man can be righteous and secondly because we know we have broken the law more times than we can count. The Calvinist Churchian tends to antinominalism — thinking that since he or she has been saved he can do anything. Which is a clear error. […]

Which is where I was going: and yes, I have seen this up close and personal.

I thought your post was about being like Jesus who stood in synagogue or Temple and criticized the religious leaders and people. It never occurred to me it was about being like Jesus when He stood in synagogue and Temple and criticized government.

Where we are officially without an established religion — but the head of state must be Anglican, and is head of that church. I looked back at the comments about the US tax code… and my eyes glazed over. I do not see how the USA can argue that there is separation of church and state and then regulate via the tax code.

The reformed position is that the church should obey the laws and influence the state but not be part of it. Locally, I support my church not having contracts with the state (we lost one for old age care recently) as it means we cannot criticise.

Are my views changing or am I growing? Not sure. I’m becoming more bloody minded, particularly as much of the church is sliding into the postmodern morass.
