Dunedin, summer, and the death of film soup.

Reatha Kenny, who has run Film Soup, solo, is having to retire her business because of health issues. She has turned her facebook group into a place when people can discuss film, and she is finishing up the last orders she has. As part of this she asked me to find some photos.

This will leave a gap for people who can develop E6 (C41 is still fairly easy to get developed here). Here are three of the scans she did: there is more to come.

As Reatha has shut the business, I have removed her link from the site.

Today, however, I went electronic, using the Nikon V1, and a prime and wide angle lens. The camera (even though it only has a once inch (CX) sensor) produces 20 MP raw files, and I have been processing and cropping them in rawtherapee.

I will continue, of course, to shoot film. I am just going to have to increase my developing skills. C41 seems fairly easy, but e6 is a challenge.

St Clair.

This is from yesterday. The pier at St Clair was there for 100 years, though over the last few years there have just been piles. After this winter’s storms, the area has collapsed.

Christchurch, 2015 [Nikon one]

I was in Christchurch for the weekend. Managed to get to the transitional cathedral and around the city centre.

Tunnel Beach.

It was a windy but fine late winter Saturday, and we went to Tunnel Beach: which is literally reached by walking down a long track (dropping a fair distance, then down a tunnel to the beach. It was a popular place to visit today.

So a bit of scenery, and a bit of street shooting on a track.

Reprocessed as smaller JPEG files to promote loading, and changed the featured image to a 100% crop, rather than a full image.

Using DX lenses to push a Nikon V3.

Three photos, with deceiving data in the EXIF file. Consider for a second the black and white photo. It is of the power line outside my house, and the data says it was taken at 200 mm. Well, sort of true: but the lens is a DX lens being used on a V3 (CX) which is a third the size. so that is functionally at least 600 mm. In the same way, the connector to the V3 means that one loses a stop.

This is a completely different setup to the native zoom that stops at 100mm — and it is a far cheaper birding solution than the dedicated CX lens, which %1500 -2000 landed in NZ. (Did I add that one could look for recent DX lenses on ebay to get a functional 900 reach).

Reatha has managed to excell herself. Over the weekend 234 scans were deposited into my dropbox account, all as .tiff files.

Now, each of these files is fairly big, and I am scanning them and bulk transforming them: having tried to use lightroom (which led to very big files) I have turned them into pngs using Rawtherapee and downsized them.

two different films: most are Velvia, Shot using a Leica M6, with a Voightlander 21mm f4 Skopar lens. The monochrome, however, was shot with the Texas Leica (Fuji GF690) with a fixed normal lens, and is on Holgapan.

The last sunday of Winter (Digital SLR).

I have a firm opinion that the 36 MP sensor in the Nikon d800 series and the Sony A7r gives close to medium format levels of detail. This is one area that size matters, and the next series of similar sensors will look a little more like the Pentax 645D.
At present, the Pentax is around $5000, while the Nikon D810 is around $3300, and the Sony is a thousand dollars cheaper.

The big step seems to be up to 50 MP — the Pentax 645z is bigger than 35 but not quite medium format, and the Mamiya 645DF (which accepts backs from people such as Phase One) is more expensive than the Leica S2

There is a reason, that above 35 mm, I go for film and scanning. The hardware is too expensive, and you need to slow down and get those shots right. Because they have to be better than this collection, taken on the last Sunday of Winter.
