    Colonial exploitation looks like a pretty low price to pay for competent rule, and a pretty low fee for the colonizer to accept for the job. Most modern Americans woild love to be oppressed and taxed by old King George, but the British caught wise around 1780 and dumped us into our post-colonial period. We did better than some colonies: our ex-colony didn’t turn into a dissolute tyranny for almost 100 years.

    We probably can’t get the Brits to resume the burden of empire, but perhaps we could all chip in a few bucks and get them to burn DC again. It’s been over 200 years since the last time, and the effect seems to have worn off.
