Bleak Theology: Hopeful Science

Time to be weird.

It is that time of year here… Son came home from English saying he ran out of time, and has physics this afternoon. Ironically, I have a music exam (Trinity College, Viola, and a very low grade — the joys of taking up instruments in middle age) this morning.

So the only cheerful one in the house is son two, who only has school exams. Given the discussions about integrity that are going on… this seems appropriate.

Psalm 15

1 O LORD, who may abide in your tent?
Who may dwell on your holy hill?

2 Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right,
and speak the truth from their heart;
3 who do not slander with their tongue,
and do no evil to their friends,
nor take up a reproach against their neighbors;
4 in whose eyes the wicked are despised,
but who honor those who fear the LORD;
who stand by their oath even to their hurt;
5 who do not lend money at interest,
and do not take a bribe against the innocent.
Those who do these things shall never be moved.

I guess when I am thinking of integrity I am thinking a bit of the consequences of non integrity. Yesterday I quoted Bad Catholic… today SSM asks if the old ways of honour and fidelity (usually called the Patriarchy) will ever come back. Brendan gives an answer.

The only thing that would ever bring something like patriarchy “back” in a systemic way is a crisis and collapse so ugly, violent, and bleak that it behooves us not to wish it upon ourselves or our descendants. Barring that, we’re looking at more entropy and more dispersed power in the years ahead, as we have seen in a consistent pattern, with fairly few reactionary interludes along the way, for the entire period since the Protestant Reformation in the West.

The “good news” is that this entropic trend leaves more personal freedom for individuals. This means that for people who are so minded, you can buck the larger trend a bit more easily than was the case in the past, under the guise of “lifestyle choice freedom”. Of course, the mainstream culture will treat you as a curiosity at best and a dangerous freak at the worst, and this will cost you if you want to advance in that mainstream culture, but if you are willing to pay the price that comes from being excluded from that culture, you have more freedom today to live that kind of a life if you wish to do so. That will likely continue as well for some time, simply because social rules look to be very lax for quite some time ahead.

It is time for us to become old fashioned, irrelevant, a joke, mocked. It is time for us to say things that the culture does not like. It is time for us to not see ourselves, as the slut feminists do, as defined by our genitals.

It is time to reform our churches, and repent. Me included.

Joel 2:12-19

12Yet even now, says the LORD,
return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
13 rend your hearts and not your clothing.
Return to the LORD, your God,
for he is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love,
and relents from punishing.
14Who knows whether he will not turn and relent,
and leave a blessing behind him,
a grain offering and a drink offering
for the LORD, your God?

15Blow the trumpet in Zion;
sanctify a fast;
call a solemn assembly;
16 gather the people.
Sanctify the congregation;
assemble the aged;
gather the children,
even infants at the breast.
Let the bridegroom leave his room,
and the bride her canopy.

17Between the vestibule and the altar
let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep.
Let them say, “Spare your people, O LORD,
and do not make your heritage a mockery,
a byword among the nations.
Why should it be said among the peoples,
‘Where is their God?'”

18Then the LORD became jealous for his land,
and had pity on his people.
19In response to his people the LORD said:
I am sending you
grain, wine, and oil,
and you will be satisfied;
and I will no more make you
a mockery among the nations

In the church we have a choice.
Remain in the mainstream, and follow the road to perdition. Or become odd, weird, and despised, and attain the crown of glory from God. The other options are now fading, for the times are truly evil.
