Bleak Theology: Hopeful Science

Plain speech

I have gone through a fair amount of the wayback machine this week and got a reasonable amount of traffic simply by mashing up a series of old posts from other people. This kind of recycling is like shellac — it protects and preserves, keeping text current.

There is one new link, to BF’s place, and the blog is now open to mining by the wordpress API.  Enough administravium.

But most of the time the blog is lower traffic and the lectionary.Words, used correctly, preserve. A pure and clear speech allows for true communication. And we will have that when restored.

Zephaniah 3:8-13

8Therefore wait for me, says the Lord, for the day when I arise as a witness. For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them my indignation, all the heat of my anger; for in the fire of my passion all the earth shall be consumed.9 At that time I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call on the name of the Lord and serve him with one accord. 10From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my suppliants, my scattered ones, shall bring my offering. 11On that day you shall not be put to shame because of all the deeds by which you have rebelled against me;  for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exultant ones, and you shall no longer be haughty in my holy mountain.
12For I will leave in the midst of you a people humble and lowly. They shall seek refuge in the name of the Lord — 13     the remnant of Israel; they shall do no wrong and utter no lies, nor shall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouths. Then they will pasture and lie down, and no one shall make them afraid.

We will speak plainly and truly. We will not be offended by words, nor be politically correct, nor censored. We will not be slaves to rigged votes, or the diktat of the progressive elite, who believe that they can run our lives better than we can manage. But this is the sin of Lucifer. It is demonic. As Bruce Charlton says.

In general, the Right should be distinguished from the Left primarily in terms of its purpose, not its procedures.

The Left wants an atheist, nihilist and hedonic society of existentially-isolated individuals; the Right wants a religious society.

The main methodological difference is that the Left is free to lie and cheat and deny and fabricate – since that is consistent with its own demonic motivations; while the Right must be realistic and truthful, since from a transcendental perspective the means cannot be dissociated from the ends.

For the Right, the means are, indeed, very much part of the end

Now, I can speak and write plainly. With effort and difficulty: over two decades of working in hospitals (not health services) as trained me in the dark art of euphemism, and a decade of work in research has made by language dry, technical and passive.  But we need to speak truth. We cannot afford to use the methods of the left — from personal attacks to redefining language and criminalizing opinions as hate speech.

We are told that in the end we will speak true speech. Now, this will not necessarily be a move to an esoteric or enochian language, but speaking plain. For it is our heartfelt opinion and stumbling plain words that give greater glory to God than any erudition we possess
